Stewards are leaders who
cross boundaries, take an integrated approach, and build coalitions
for action. They have 360 degree vision, recognizing the
interdependencies between the economy, the environment, and social
equity. Stewards operate at the center of tough issues, not on
the edges. They are risk takers, they are passionate and
energetic. They are people of vision.

Initiative Background
The Stewardship Initiative has been gaining momentum since
its initial inception in May of 2008, powered by the excitement
and commitment of our Stewards Group. In the past 14 months, we
have completed a Regional Perception Survey process along with
small group conversations throughout the area, focusing on the
the strengths of our regional community and what those strengths
mean to our future.
Survey results and comments have been tabulated from over
1,050 completed surveys, and from this information the Stewards
Group has identified Shared Destiny Statement for our region.
This statement was built off of the survey and conversation
information compiled from throughout the region.

businesses, education, and governance;

The leading regional center in the upper Midwest for
world-class, global manufacturing, especially in the areas
of automation and machine control;

A respected leader in the management of our natural
resources;

A welcoming community, embracing diversity of age,
race, gender, creed, and economic status; and

A UNITED regional community, committed to working
together toward our common destiny.
To support the Destiny Statement, the Stewards have
identified 13 Destiny Drivers/Goals to help
strengthen the overall well-being of our area. We feel that these Destiny Drivers encompass the community
needs identified in the survey and conversation process and the
group is now releasing the Drivers to the community through our
media partners. Champion organizations have been identified and
have stepped forward to spearhead each Driver, and we are
confident that by working hand-in-hand with our champions, the
goals will be accomplished.
To track the progress of each of the Destiny Drivers, the
Measures Committee is currently working to identify measureable
areas of success for each Driver. Information and progress
will be tracked over the coming years.
The Stewardship Initiative is gaining speed and continuing to
work to unite our region for a vibrant future. We invite anyone
who has a passion for strengthening the entire Alexandria Area
