Stewards are leaders who
cross boundaries, take an integrated approach, and build coalitions
for action. They have 360 degree vision, recognizing the
interdependencies between the economy, the environment, and social
equity. Stewards operate at the center of tough issues, not on
the edges. They are risk takers, they are passionate and
energetic. They are people of vision.

Perception Survey Comments
Below are some of the comments
received in the Community Perception Survey.
"I believe
that Alexandria is one of the most progressive cities in the State of
Minnesota. I also believe that we are on the cusp of making very important
decisions that will directly impact the success of Alexandria’s future.
There seem to be so many significant decisions about Alexandria’s future on
the table right now. Conducting the Advantage Alexandria survey at this
time is crucial and will provide the leaders of Alexandria with information
to make the best decisions possible. Thank you for being so proactive in
developing and implementing this survey and the Advantage Alexandria Team."
Quality of Life Comments:
-
"There are great things happening in Alexandria (new
schools, new restaurants, etc) but there is always room for
improvement. I would particularly love to see more "professional" jobs
coming into the area as I think that will help keep the younger
population not only coming to town but staying in town as well."
-
"With the fast increase in population, special
attention should be paid to maintaining the quality of life so that this
region does not become another large, congested, metropolitan area."
-
"I still think there is opportunity to make our
community safer and to provide more summer programs for kids and
families outside of the 8-5 time frame."
-
"The sense of community makes Alex what it is."
-
"Low income families are left out of social and
recreational experiences."
Growth-Related Comments:
-
"Perhaps
more education needs to be done with the public to give awareness that a
certain amount of growth is beneficial to the area and everyone, but
along with that comes the responsibility to have adequate schools,
proper zoning, safe roads, public works, water, and sewer capacities.
-
"We've looked at housing outside the region somewhat
because of my husband's job situation and were shocked to find out how
many communities don't provide city sewer in heavily populated
residential areas. The Alexandria area is to be commended for their
efforts in this area."
-
"There are so many groups with a focus on this region
- I would like to see a united effort with better communication and
definition to the general public...the average citizen has no idea about
any of them."
Final/Additional Comments:
-
"I think this [initiative] is a good idea and I
applaud your efforts on trying to get opinions and viewpoints from all
age groups."
-
"Thanks for asking for people's thoughts on these
important topics and for striving to make Alexandria an even better
place to live and work!"
-
"I think our community needs to be very careful about
isolating certain economic/social groups and to see "new minds and
leaders" in our community; not just to rely on the established
leadership in our community."
-
"The lakes are vital to the area, protect the
environment and quality of the lakes and there will always be a solid
foundation for the community to grow around. Go for slow quality growth
that can be sustained and enhance the beauty of the area."
